Ned Vessey
I am a writer from Dorset, although currently based in Bristol. My work is driven by a desire to explore the relationship between landscapes and people, and how each shapes the other. Rural England, the natural world and the everyday highs and lows of life also play an important role in my work.
Journalism & essays
My journalism has appeared in The Guardian, Wisden's Nightwatchman Quarterly, and is upcoming in Slightly Foxed Quarterly.
Fiction
I am currently working on a collection of short stories, some of which I have read at performances in Bristol. Varied in setting and character, featuring everyone from a farmer who becomes obsessed with a sparrowhawk, to a sculptor taken from his family to create a likeness of a king of kings, there is an atmosphere of strangeness in my stories, which also try to capture the mood and feeling of a particular place and time.
Some of my fiction has been featured in From the Lighthouse magazine.
Poetry
I began writing poetry at the start of 2024, and have performed regularly in Bristol ever since. In my poetry I seek to capture the mood of small, everyday moments in life, whilst also exploring the sound and feel of language. 'Solstice Poem' was recently featured in Write On! magazine, whilst other poems are available to read on this website or my Instagram.
